OTS Meeting: Triple-Organ Transplants

The topic of the OTS meeting on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022 is all about the rare triple-organ transplants performed by the University of Chicago Medicine.  Two transplant recipients who each received a heart, liver and kidney transplant at the University of Chicago will speak about their experiences.  Our speakers for this meeting are Mr. Ed Hogan. Mr. Daru Smith and Ms. Laura Holzinger.  Ed Hogan received a new heart, liver, and kidney on December 13, 2020.  Daru Smith received his triple transplant on December 20, 2018.  Ms. Laura Holzinger is a social worker at the University of Chicago Medicine who worked with both Ed and Daru when they were patients.

The University of Chicago Medicine is a world leader in triple-organ transplants.  To date, 13 of these transplants have been performed at the University of Chicago, more than any other hospital in the world.

Multi-organ transplants of any kind are rare and difficult to perform successfully.  They account for just 4% of the total number of all organ transplants in the US in 2004.   At this meeting on February 4, we will learn about the logistics of performing a heart, liver, and kidney transplant on a patient.  There will be time at the end of the presentation for questions.

Please join us at the OTS meeting on Friday, February 4 to hear the inspiring stories of two transplant recipients who received a rare triple-organ transplants.
