OTS Meeting: Successfully Navigating Life as a Caregiver

The next OTS meeting will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024.  This meeting will be held on Zoom, starting at 7pm CST.   Our speaker for this meeting is Barb Stewart, who will speak about the topic:  Successfully Navigating Life as a Caregiver.

Barb Stewart claimed the unsolicited title of Caregiver in 2013 when her husband was diagnosed with end-stage liver failure.  Her role continued throughout and after his live-donor liver transplant at Northwestern in 2016.

Barb’s knowledge, research, experience, and curiosity led her to become the author of The Caregiver’s Guidebook and a spokesperson for Caregivers nationwide.  In this presentation, Barb will share her passion for helping Caregivers successfully navigate their new role while she helps them become more educated with the healthcare system.  Her mission is to help Caregivers embrace the title of Caregiver, and provide them with awareness, encouragement, and comfort.

Concerns of Caregivers:

·      Are you overwhelmed not knowing what to expect or what to do next?

·      Are you faced with tasks and decision-making that you never thought about?

·      Are you spending most of your time away from the comforts of home?

·      Do people offer you help, and you do not know how to respond?

·      Do you feel anxious about navigating parking and time spent in the hospital?

·      Do you have feelings and emotions that appear long after the transplant?

Barb’s Presentation Helps:

·      Eliminate confusion and frustration during your hospital stay.

·      Suggest how to deal with logistics in the healthcare industry.

·      Provide tools for effective communication.

·      Offer tips and lists for taking care of the Caregiver.

Barb will explain how her book, The Caregiver’s Guidebook, is an all-inclusive place for you to keep track of your journey and provides awareness of experiences commonly associated with transplant.  She offers a glossary of medical terms, descriptions of the role of healthcare workers, and simple ideas of how to take care of the Caregiver.  Once you embrace this new role, you will be able to help pave the way for Caregivers that will follow in your footsteps.

Barb is the owner of a wellness and therapeutic bodywork business, Project Coordinator for Transplant Village, is a motivational speaker, two-time author, and has over 20 years of experience working in a community hospital.

This meeting is free and is open to the public.   We will email the Zoom login info the day before this meeting.

We hope that you and the caregivers in your life will join us for this meeting on Friday, May 3, 2024.

LOVE YOUR LIVER - PANEL DISCUSSION

LOVE YOUR LIVER - PANEL DISCUSSION

OTS is excited to present a special panel discussion about liver health during the regular educational meeting on Friday, March 1, 2024.  This meeting will be on Zoom, starting at 7:00PM CST.   All transplant recipients and their families are invited to attend this program.

The main speaker for this panel discussion will be Dr. Julia Wattacheril, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City.

We welcome an interactive presentation by Dr. Julia Wattacheril on maintaining a healthy liver, which will be followed by several patients sharing their own post-transplant journeys.    What can you do to make sure that your liver stays healthy post-transplant?  How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?  What is the impact of weight, nutrition, immunosuppression drugs and exercise on liver health?  Since loving your liver includes friendship and connection, Dr. Wattacheril will also be joined by Aimee Muth, LCSW, to discuss the importance of social supports for overall health. One or two liver transplant recipients will also join this meeting to share their transplant journeys.

Dr. Wattacheril is a physician scientist with a dynamic and human-centered approach to research and integration with clinical care. She enjoys tackling difficult, field-limiting questions that emerge from caring for patients with liver disease using innovative approaches that are tested real time in multiple dimensions. The teams she leads are made of individuals with more than computational acumen and clinical expertise but link the relational and ethical capacities required in patient care to the molecules and data points that emerge from humans -- in all of their and their environment’s complexity. Her current projects test hypotheses at scale across populations. She has a particular commitment to develop and translate science and medicine not just across disciplines but to those most affected and often least included in the conversation.

This OTS meeting is free and is open to the public.  Mark your calendar now to attend this important OTS meeting on Friday, March 1, 2024.

OTS Mentor Training Workshop

   When:  Sat. Dec. 2, 2023

Where:  on Zoom. You can join from anywhere.

  Time:      10am - Noon CST

Who:     Anyone who is interested in becoming an OTS Mentor can join this workshop.

Current OTS Mentors are Invited to attend this workshop to share your experience as a mentor.

What is a Mentor?

An OTS Mentor provides one-on-one support for transplant recipients,

those waiting for a transplant and for caregivers. OTS mentors do not provide medical advice.

Why Should I Become an OTS Mentor?

Mentoring is a way to give back and share the joys of a second chance at life with someone who is waiting for an organ transplant, adjusting to life after a transplant or is a caregiver for a transplant recipient.

How can a Mentor Help?

No one should go through this journey alone. A mentor:

 -    Provides hope and understanding

-   Helps a mentee navigate the transplant process.

 - Shares personal experiences.

Who can Become a Mentor?

Anyone who is at least 6 months post-transplant can become a mentor. Every OTS Mentor must participate in a Mentor Training Workshop before they can be matched with a mentee.

How can I apply to Become a Mentor?

Go to the Mentor Program section of the OTS website. Then click on the form called the OTS Mentor form to Become an OTS Mentor.

Complete and submit the online signup form.

You will be contacted within 48 hours about the next step to becoming an OTS Mentor.

OTS Mentor Training Workshop

OTS MENTOR PROGRAM

Transplant recipients are invited to become a mentor in the OTS Mentor Program. to help someone just starting on their transplant journey. We have scheduled a Mentor Training Workshop for all new mentors.

New Mentor Training Workshop

   When:  Sat. March 11, 2023

  Time:      9:30am - 11:30am

Who:     Anyone who is interested in becoming an OTS Mentor can join this workshop.

A mentor:

     Provides hope and understanding

·     Helps a mentee navigate the transplant process.

     Shares personal experiences.

Who can Become a Mentor?

Anyone who is at least 6 months post-transplant can become a mentor. Every OTS Mentor must participate in a Mentor Training Workshop before they can be matched with a mentee.

How can I apply to Become a Mentor?

OTS MEETING: Nutrition is a Marathon, not a Sprint; How to Nourish your body Intuitively with Organ Transplantation.

The educational OTS meeting in August will be held on Friday, August 5, 2022, starting at 7pm CST.   This meeting will be held on the Zoom, videoconference system.

We are excited to announce a program on nutrition presented by Ms. Alyson Haebig, a registered dietician and nutritionist (RDN).  Ms. Haebig is a nutrition consultant in private practice in Chicago with a specialty in intuitive eating, medical nutrition therapy, eating disorder recovery, sports nutrition and more.   You can learn more about Alyson Haebig at her website (www.empowernourish.com).

Ms. Haebig explained about her presentation on nutrition for Organ Transplant Support as follows: “As a registered dietitian dedicated to helping people develop a better relationship with food, I am very excited to have the opportunity to speak with you all about my favorite topics: Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size. More specifically - how to nourish your body intuitively with Organ Transplantation. Every day we receive urgent messages to "cut this out," "this is unhealthy," or advertisements to "lose weight fast." Despite these jarring messages, our bodies actually care way more about trends over months and years than any specific date, meal, or food. During my presentation, I will explain that while we get messages to “sprint” towards better health, we can actually maintain our wellbeing, quality of life, and sanity more when we consider the bigger picture or the “marathon.”

This OTS meeting is free and is open to the public.    We will post the login info for this meeting on the OTS website the day before the meeting.

We hope that you join us for this important meeting on Friday, August 5, 2022.

OTS Meeting: Learn about Transplant Genomics - Tools for Transplant Success

The next virtual meeting of Organ Transplant Support will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022, starting at 7pm CST.  This meeting will be held by Zoom videoconference.   We are excited to offer a program about Transplant Genomics, a leading medical diagnostics company.   The speakers for this program will be Dr. Timothy Cober, PharD, and Mr. Angel Arroyo, MSN, RN.  Dr. Cober and Mr. Arroyo will explain the tests that have been developed by Transplant Genomics to improve long-term transplant outcomes for kidney and liver transplant patients.  We will also hear from a kidney transplant recipient and her experience with OmniGraf.   This is exciting news for transplant patients that you won’t want to miss!

Have you ever heard of silent rejection before? As an organ transplant recipient, you’ve been through quite a journey. And now at this point in your journey protecting and prolonging the life of your transplanted organ is key. Silent rejection, also known as subclinical acute rejection, or subAR, is the earliest form of rejection in kidney transplant recipients.

OmniGraf is a panel blood test that detects silent rejection and helps your doctor get the earliest and most accurate view about the health of your transplanted kidney without the pain of a biopsy. With the help of OmniGraf, your doctor can tell whether your kidney is healthy and well, or if it is at risk for silent rejection.

Protocols for the current standard of care for post-transplant monitoring typically rely on serial monitoring of immunosuppressive drug levels; serum or enzyme testing; painful, expensive, and invasive surveillance biopsies; and the clinical appearance of rejection symptoms, indicating early allograft rejection. These insensitive, late-trailing indicators of graft function may not appear until significant organ damage occurs, leaving clinicians and patients with fewer options to improve organ health before more severe complications occur.

Transplant Genomics aims to improve transplant outcomes through molecular diagnostics tests that detect early signs of kidney graft injury, differentiate among actionable causes, and enable optimization of therapy.    Transplant Genomics has developed tests  – OmniGraf, TruGraf, and TRAC –  which aid physicians with non-invasive monitoring to improve long-term transplant outcomes.  For more information about Transplant Genomics visit their website at:  www.transplantgenomics.com.

This OTS meeting is open to all pre and post-transplant recipients and their families.   The Zoom login for this meeting is listed below..  We look forward to seeing you at this important Zoom meeting on Friday, April 1.

OTS Meeting: Triple-Organ Transplants

The topic of the OTS meeting on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022 is all about the rare triple-organ transplants performed by the University of Chicago Medicine.  Two transplant recipients who each received a heart, liver and kidney transplant at the University of Chicago will speak about their experiences.  Our speakers for this meeting are Mr. Ed Hogan. Mr. Daru Smith and Ms. Laura Holzinger.  Ed Hogan received a new heart, liver, and kidney on December 13, 2020.  Daru Smith received his triple transplant on December 20, 2018.  Ms. Laura Holzinger is a social worker at the University of Chicago Medicine who worked with both Ed and Daru when they were patients.

The University of Chicago Medicine is a world leader in triple-organ transplants.  To date, 13 of these transplants have been performed at the University of Chicago, more than any other hospital in the world.

Multi-organ transplants of any kind are rare and difficult to perform successfully.  They account for just 4% of the total number of all organ transplants in the US in 2004.   At this meeting on February 4, we will learn about the logistics of performing a heart, liver, and kidney transplant on a patient.  There will be time at the end of the presentation for questions.

Please join us at the OTS meeting on Friday, February 4 to hear the inspiring stories of two transplant recipients who received a rare triple-organ transplants.
